Recognizing Signs/Omens: Pigeon

When certain plants, animals, natural elements show up in your life - the universe and/or your ancestors are trying to get your attention.

When pigeon and its symbolism show in your life in a powerful way, pay attention! The universe is trying to get a message through to you about the power of pigeon.

Pigeons have been celebrated throughout cultures and time for their loyalty and commitment to family. Pigeons are considered the only bird to provide “milk” for their young (it’s called crop milk and is formed from crop lining secretion, by both males and females to feed their young). This unique two-parent contribution to the feeding of their squabs sets them in their own category of co-parenting.  Nicola Tesla never married but was said to have a special affinity for a certain white pigeon – apparently genius recognized the devotion of this lovely little bird. If you’re seeing pigeon show up it may be a sign that you are enjoying a particularly good period in your partner/relationship and you should trust the help, support and truth of your partner’s willingness to contribute. If you are single or have been wanting to attract a partner who is mature, helpful and supportive seeing pigeon is a good harbinger that this person is on their way.

If you want to read a story about the incredible resilience of pigeon then look no further than the story of World War I hero, Cher Ami – the homing pigeon that saved a group of 194 American Soldiers, known as the Lost Battalion during the Meuse-Argonne offensive in October 1918. Cher Ami was one of the homing pigeons trained to deliver messages during the combat and chaos of WWI. Serving at the front lines in France at the very end of the war, this brave little pigeon (thought to be a him though later after his valiant little death discovered to be a her) took flight to deliver a message to Allied troops that they were firing on their own Signal Corp men!

She took flight after several other pigeons trying to deliver the same message had been shot and killed. Upon takeoff she was shot. But managed to stand after the shock of her wound and fly to deliver her message. The message was received, the artillery stopped and the 194 men still alive were saved. The little pigeon underwent immediate surgery to save her from the bullet wound through her chest but her little leg could not be saved and she lived the rest of her life with one leg. She was awarded the French Croix de Guerre with Palm for heroic service and upon her death preserved in the Smithsonian Museum as a hero. That kind of resilience may be the message for you – if you’re going through a tough time – keep going! You have what it takes to deliver your message and you will be recognized and celebrated on the other end. You’ve got this!

Finally, pigeon – especially the homing pigeon – is a symbol of home. Known to be able to fly great distances to return to their home, in ways still not fully understood by science, if you’re seeing pigeon it could be a beckoning from spirit that it’s time to return home. Do what it takes. Answer the call. It’s time to get back to your roots and home where you will thrive once again.
