Recognizing Signs/Omens: Mockingbird
When certain plants, animals, natural elements show up in your life - the universe and/or your ancestors are trying to get your attention.
When mockingbird shows up in your life in a big way, pay attention as the universe could be trying to get a message through to you.
Mockingbird, also known as a Thrasher bird in some cultures, is a small but mighty bird that commands respect and admiration for its fearlessness. Mockingbird is extremely protective of its young and its family and if it feels threatened will attack other birds – including hawks and other much larger raptors – as well as humans, cats, dogs and others.
My cat once decided to get too close to a tree with a mockingbird in it and ended up with a trip to the vet: a lesson neither he nor I will forget when the cats get out! These little birds have no fear when it comes to boundaries. If mockingbird comes into your life it might be calling your attention to a situation that needs better boundaries and telling you to be courageous in standing up for yourself, your needs and your wants.
Another possible meaning of mockingbird is about boundaries but specifically related to partners. Mockingbird females demand a strong, helpful provider in a partner who pitches in with chick rearing, food providing, best building and defense. If her mate isn’t living up to her standards she lets it be known and if he really doesn’t meet her standards – she kicks him out and finds a new partner that provides what she and the family need. If mockingbird is coming into your life right now it might be more specifically saying its time for your partner to contribute and rise to the partnership needs, or to get rid of them. Again, fearless and courageous boundary enforcement.
Finally, mockingbird may be calling you to remember your true, authentic voice and to use it. This can be in defense of boundaries, yes, but also in any endeavor or experience where you’re being quiet when you need to step up and step out onto the stage of your own life. Mockingbirds are known for their songs, their voice and their love of mimicry. You, too, have a beautiful song to sing in this life. It’s time to use your authentic voice!
