Recognizing Signs/Omens: Butterfly
When certain plants, animals, natural elements show up in your life - the universe and/or your ancestors are trying to get your attention.
When butterfly shows up in your life in a big way, pay attention as the universe could be trying to get a message through to you. The first and probably best-known symbology of seeing butterfly is one of transformation. Butterfly goes through four very distinct growth cycles from egg, to larvae, to caterpillar to the beautiful, airborne butterfly. Cultures all across the globe have recognized that transcendent journey from humble origins, rooted in the earth, to a complete transformation that takes to the air. If you’re seeing butterfly during a time of challenge, this omen is letting you know that the change you’re on will result in the wings you desire. Just hang in there and don’t rush the transformation.
Another possible meaning of butterfly is about eternity. All living things have a life cycle, but butterfly’s cycle is often revered by cultures as representing the immortality of life. One day we will make a literal shedding of our earthly shell and take flight with the angels and departed ones to reintegrate into consciousness and the pure love that is on the other side. If you’re facing difficulties butterfly is here to remind you that the angels are watching over, you and to try to zoom out and see the bigger picture. Try to enjoy this short, wild ride on earth and remember that the only universal truth is love, that never dies.
Finally, butterfly may be the messenger of a departed loved one. When my own beloved yellow Lab, Betty, passed away six years ago, yellow butterflies started showing up everywhere. It happened so much, and still to this day does, that my daughters will now see a yellow butterfly and say, “look mom, Betty wanted to come along, too.” I know this is the way my sweet girl lets me know she’s with me, even now, in a different form when I need her. Your loved ones, too, might be trying to use butterfly to call your attention to their gentle, colorful and loving presence.
